MOROCCO, Marrakech. June, 17, 2021.
The old city of Marrakech is a rabbit warren of winding streets, grand mosques, and traditional rammed-earth architecture. However, a newfound taste for concrete, which is seen as representative of modernity, and can be easier to manipulate, is changing the medina’s architectural landscape, taking on an increasingly non-traditional tone. With large numbers of incoming rural migrants, many of whom are escaping deteriorating agricultural conditions, Marrakech is rapidly expanding into the surrounding greenbelt.
