USA. Arizona. Sasabe region. July 2024. Steel gate opened to allow debris from flash floods to pass. Monsoon rains and flash floods can make passage on road along wall nearly impassable even with 4 wheel drive. Tuscon Samaritans deliver food and water to migrants who had just crossed the Sonora desert to claim asylum who wait for US Border Patrol for processing. Migrants pay Mexican cartels for passage through “their” territory suffering extortion, rape and abandonment. Some are also subject to violence and intimidation of US-based militia groups who “tour” the region. According to Migration Data Portal, the border between Mexico and the United States is the second deadliest land crossing in the world with 5,289 known deaths to date.
