Moises Saman
JORDAN. Amman. 3 december, 2023.
Najwa Omar Haider (RIGHT), aged 55
Location: Al-Hussien camp
— Tell us the story about how your family originally arrived at this camp?
She originally hails from Yaffa in Palestine, and her mother is from Al-Ramla. They sought refuge in Al Karama in 1948 and were later displaced to Al-Hussien camp. She married her late husband in the Hussien camp.
—How do you feel about what is happening in Gaza now with the war? Do you think the conflict will end in a way that will make it more likely you can return to Palestine?
She frequently watches news on Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya channels. She expresses feeling sick and exhausted due to the ongoing war in Gaza and the heartbreaking news of children losing their lives. Her utmost concern is for the children, as she believes that while grown-ups can take care of themselves, the safety of children is paramount. I pray for God to protect Gaza.
Jabal el-Hussein camp is one of four camps established in Jordan after 1948 to accommodate refugees who were displaced from Palestine as a result of the 1948 War.
The camp was set up in 1952 for 8,000 refugees on an area of 0.42 square kilometres, north-west of Amman.
