JORDAN. Al Jizeh. 2 December, 2023.
Majed Abed Al-Hameed Khalaf, aged 65 (born 1958) stands in an alleyway inside the Talbieh Palestinian refugee camp south of Amman.
Majed was born in Jericho, in today’s Israeli-occupied West Bank. He and his family were displaced to Jordan, first to a refugee camp in Jabal Al-Naser, where they stayed in a school for almost a month before moving to Talbieh Camp.
His family obtained two units—one for his grandmother and one for his father, mother, and siblings. He has a brother and three sisters. Majed has six sons, one daughter, and 14 grandchildren. He is one of the elders in the camp, and is regarded as a “Mokhtar” a person of influence that is a liaison between the Jordanian government and the displaced poeple living in the camp.
Majed expresses gratitude, stating, "Thank God, we live in peace and everything is okay in the camp and Jordan, compared to what is happening in Gaza, despite the tough economic challenges, poverty, and high unemployment rate." He mentions that the area surrounding the camp has numerous factories, and although the airport is nearby, it hasn't significantly aided the camp. Majed laments the trend of hiring people from other cities while overlooking the residents of the camp.
He also expresses deep sorrow over the situation in Gaza, explaining, "What is happening in Gaza is breaking my heart. After witnessing all the killing of children and the presence of dead bodies in the streets, I decided to turn off the TV and my phone because watching the news every day exhausted me. Even in my sleep, I dream of the killings and dead bodies. I've started worrying about our safety here in Jordan, as we are not far from what is happening in Gaza and the West Bank." Majed believes that the resistance in Gaza has revitalized the Palestinian cause. He expresses a strong desire to return to Palestine, mentioning, "If you open the door for me to go back to Palestine, I would go right now." After being displaced
