The timeless ways of the medieval Balkans still hold in western Macedonia, where
Sojan Slaveski enjoys a smoke while his wife, Duha, sorts beans grown in their small
private plot. Mostly old folk remain in the small village of Brezani, surviving on their
own crops and the occasional sale of a sheep. Much of the younger generation moves
to the cities or joins the ranks of Yugoslavs working abroad.
