PALESTINE. 24 February 2024. Jenin refugee camp. On July 3, 2023, the Israeli military launched a significant operation in Jenin and its refugee camp. Amidst the chaos, Kamal and three friends ventured out to understand where the army was stationed. It wasn’t long before one of Kamal’s friends was struck by a sniper’s bullet, dying instantly. With panic setting in, Kamal and the remaining two friends scrambled through the narrow streets, attempting to evade the sniper. They made a desperate decision: retrieve their friend’s body before Israeli forces could claim it. But as they approached, the sniper fired again, wounding Kamal’s second friend in the leg. Kamal, gripped by fear and determination, rushed to help. Lifting his injured friend, Kamal’s third companion joined the effort—only for the sniper to strike again. The second friend, already shot, was fatally hit in the chest as Kamal carried him. Trapped between the bodies of their fallen friends, Kamal and the third friend were left with few options. Then, another shot. The bullet tore through Kamal’s head, blinding him, and fatally struck his third friend. Kamal survived, but the bullet that claimed his vision and fractured his skull left a physical reminder of a day marked by tragedy.
