SUDAN. Chongori, Nuba Mountains, Sudan. January, 2024.
Controlled forest fires in preparation to build a house in a plot of land near the village of Chongori, deep in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan.
The Nuba Mountains is a remote area. Consequently, the infrastructure in the region is undeveloped and access to services has been poor. The majority of people live in mud huts in scattered villages and may walk up to seven hours a day to collect water. Communication is slow, because there are no paved roads, only tracks, many of which have fallen into disuse and become overgrown. Most people travel on foot, and a few by cart or bicycle. Access to radio or television is poor throughout the region, and many rely on word of mouth for communication.
