SRI LANKA. Anuradhapura, The Ruwanwelisaya Stupa. July 2024.
The Lotus was selected as the national flower of Sri Lanka due to its cultural and historical significance in the country. It is considered a sacred flower in Buddhis. It has been depicted in many ancient paintings and sculptures. The lotus symbolizes purity within Sri Lankan culture and is also said to symbolize the country's flourishing development. The Ruwanwelisaya Stupa is one of the biggest place of worship of the country. The stupa is one of the world's tallest ancient monuments, standing at 103 m (338 ft) and with a circumference of 290 m (951 ft). Two quarts or one Dona of the Buddha's relics are enshrined in the stupa, making it the largest collection of his relics anywhere. Lotus flowers are used by believers as a symbolic offerings to the Triple Gem, giving rise to contemplative gratitude and inspiration. Outside the temple many vendors vendors artfully arrange the vibrant flowers, offering them to pilgrims and tourists alike.
