MEXICO. Oaxaca. Sunday, October 27, 2019. When crossing the desert, migrants are asked to cover their shoes with camouflage slippers that have a furry sole, to avoid leaving traces behind them that would allow the route to be identified by the Border Patrol. The convoys often include a trace broomer, a person at the back of the line who erases the footsteps of the rest of the group. The camouflage slippers can be purchased in the makeshift supermarkets of Altar, one of the last towns in the state of Sonora before the desert border. For the picture, I used one of these slippers to camouflage the cloak of Mexico’s patron saint, the Virgin of Guadalupe.
