NIGERIA. Ogbia. December 18, 2024.
Permanent Aselo, 23, takes her 5-month-old baby, Talent, to the local hospital for a medical check-up in Onuegbu community, Bayelsa State. Talent was vaccinated against the desease as part of a national vaccination campaign supported by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, UNICEF and WHO that started in November 2024 in Bayelsa and Bekki states, where malaria's prevalence is high. Permanent lost her first child to malaria at five months in 2021. As the most populous country in Africa, Nigeria accounts for about 27% of the global malaria burden and 31% of global malaria deaths, according to the latest WHO data.
