GB. Northern Ireland. Belfast. 'The bonfires. Lit at midnight on July 11, these huges bonfires (usually constructed of wooden pallets) can be seen all over Belfast. Typically, they are crowned with a tricolour Nationalist flag or images of various politicians such as Gerry Adams. These days, local communities can receive a grant of up to £3,000 towards the cost of a bonfire - but the guidelines are strictly enforced. Nothing too sectarian is allowed, so a 'Kill all Taigs" poster such as the one that was reported in The Irish News this summer is not acceptable, and that bonfire could lose its subsidy.'Unlit bonfire at the old Monarch laundry on Donegal Road. Guardian Cities Project. 2008.
