POLAND. Krakow. Steelmill. Nowa Huta ('New Steelworks') was built in the early 1950s, 10km east of the centre of Krakow, in an attempt to bring a 'healthy' working-class and industrial injection into the strong cultural and aristocratic traditions of the city. The nearest raw materials, however, were far away, and so the mill was economically unviable. It is now privately owned and operates at a fraction of its former capacity. June 2005.
