MARSHALL ISLANDS. The people of the Marshall Islands have strongly held Christian beliefs but also respect older cultural traditions in which the ancestors are honoured. Carefully tended family grave plots like these next to the homesteads of the living are traditionally built on the sheltered side of the islands on the edge of the lagoons and practically on the beach. Evacuation would mean the added emotional blow of abandoning the hallowed resting place of past generations. 2004.
