G.B. ENGLAND. Cake and pipe, Eastbourne. 'This photograph was taken at Eastbourne beach last summer. What better place to eat a piece of Battenburg cake and smoke a pipe? And although Battenburg doesn't sound English, I always associate its yellow and pink pastel colours with the faded glory of England. I am fascinated by the accesories with which people surround themselves, and I was drawn to this beach like a bee to honey : by people smoking cigarettes, wearing sunglasses- and in this case, eating cake and smoking a pipe'. 1999.
