Egypt. Sinai. St Catherine's Monastery. The Greek Orthodox monastery nestling at the foot of Mount Sinai is said to be the oldest continuously inhabited Christian monastery in the world. Founded in AD 527 by Emperor Justinian, it replaced an earlier church said to be on the site where Moses saw the burning bush. The monastery museum houses a collection of 2000 plus icons dating from the 6th century, a collection second to none because many icons in places more accessible than this establishment in the centre of the desert were destroyed through the ages. Here Bedouins with their camels wait to take tourists back down to their buses.
