VIETNAM. Quang Tri province. Hai Lang district. The central coastal province of Quang Tri is one of the most vulnerable to flooding in the whole of Vietnam, and Hai Lang district is the most vulnerable within the province. Climate change will bring an increased risk of disaster to Vietnam. Oxfam works in Hai Lang district, helping to train villagers to prepare for floods and storms, and how to adapt to changes.
My Thuy village, Hai An commune. Tran Thi Mot (59) holds up a photo of her and her husband Phan Thanh Hieu (59) from their wedding day in 1971. The photo is the one possession Mot tries to keep safe when a typhoon hits.
"I put the portrait of me and my husband in the wardrobe - it reminds me of our wedding back in 1971, we had it restored recently in 1991. Looking at the photo brings back happy memories. We had 40 people there, and a big banquet, but because of the war we had to be careful of air strikes - during the evening we kept an eye out for bombs."
"We experience extreme weather now - when it's hot it's extremely hot, and when it rains it last for several days. It wasn't like this before; now we see more changes in the weather. We get more typhoons these days too, and they're stronger than before. I don't know about the causes, but probably these changes are on a global scale, these are worldwide changes." 2009.
