SPAIN. Andalucia. El Ejido. At the Colegio Jose Salazar in El Ejido near Almeria Spain school-teacher Jose Manuel, a social scientist from the region, tries to help children, whose fathers are migrants working the vast the greenhouse vegetable industry in southern Spain, to assimilate into Spanish culture. The programme is called ATAL Ð Aula Temporal de Adaptaci—n Linguistica. In the class there are 6 children between 7-11 years from Romania, Guinea and Morocco. The special learning session is for 3 months, by which time children have a good grasp of the language. The parents, however, will speak very little Spanish. June 2001.
