G.B. England. Wiltshire. Salisbury. Salisbury Cathedral. "From Darkness to Light", the cathedral's Advent Procession. As the Bishop of Salisbury, the Right Reverend Nicholas Holtam, clergy and choirs process along the north and south aisles to meet at the spire crossing, church members keep pace with them lighting 1300 candles as they go until the whole cathedral, as in medieval times, is lit by candlelight. The procession is punctuated with sung phrases drawn from scripture and known as the Advent Antiphons; there are readings from both the Old and New Testament and carols in which the congregation can take part. At the end of the hour long service the two processions combine and process down the nave. The organ plays as the congregation enters and exits the cathedral. 2013
