China. Mongolia. Xiangshawan is a holiday resort, Mongolian theme park on the edge of the Gobi desert for Chinese tourists. Participants in the dawn Buddhist ceremony walk around the ovoo in traditional Mongolian costume as the suns breaks over the horizon. An ovoo is a type of shamanistic cairn, usually made from stones or wood. Ovoos are often found at the top of mountains and in other high places such as mountain passes. They serve mainly as religious sites, used in worship of the mountains and the sky as well as in Buddhist ceremonies, but often are also landmarks. 2013
