USA. St. Paul, Minnesota. 2020. Black Lives Matter protest at the State Capitol in St. Paul a few days after the killing of George Floyd by police. For the first time in the history of civil rights in the United States, a broad-based coalition bridging the racial divide mobilized to protest the unjust killing, and the movement spread across the United States. The largely peaceful protests were often countered with aggressive force from heavily militarized police and the National Guard. After several days in which elements of the protest engaged in looting and arson, the police moved in on several thousand peaceful demonstrators, firing tear gas, pepper spray, and rubber-coated bullets. There were dozens of injuries, with journalists being especially targeted. I had to perform first aid on Ed Ou of NBC, a very experienced journalist who had been shot in the face by police, causing a bloody scalp wound that required a hospital visit and stitches.
