Kirki. Turkmenistan. 2009. A verterinarian fishes in an irrigation canal in northeast Turkmenistan near the Amu Darya river. This portion of the Amu Darya, which today defines the border between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, is extremely fertile and has been used for farming for many centuries. Ancient trade routes linking Asia and Europe followed the course of the river.
