Carolyn Drake
Kyrgyzstan. Talas. 2010. A shaman named Burul went late at night to perform a ceremony called zhar to purify a house. She mixes the shamanic rituals with muslim prayers. When the candles completely burn out, she turns off the lights and continues the ceremony in the dark, dancing around the room with a whip, repeating words from the koran, and speaking with the spirits.
