Carolyn Drake
China. Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. Azak. 2008. A Han Chinese woman teaches Mandarin Chinese to Uyghur girls. Xinjiang's bilingual education policy has moved the Uyghur language to the margins. More and more Uyghurs can speak Mandarin Chinese, the language of the Chinese economy. Many Uyghur teachers who don't speak fluent Chinese have lost their jobs.
