While searching for farmers on the outskirts of the Hotan, Carolyn Drake heard loud explosions in the distance and followed the sounds to find the neighbourhood popcorn man surrounded by a crowd of munching spectators. People brought bags of corn from home that the popcorn man heated up under a fire, then transferred into a metal bin where the corn exploded with a loud bang and poof of smoke.
