IRAQ. Chibaish. 2012. Two Madan (Marsh Arab) sisters, Hamde Karamala and Fatma Karamala, sit in front of their reed house built beside the Central Marsh's main canal. They have been living here for a bout three years while her family live in Chibaish and come to help at weekends. The Central Marsh, one of three distinct areas of the great Mesopotamian Marshes, lies between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers and was almost completely dried out under the rule of Saddam Hussein. The Karamala family moved away when the marsh was drained as their buffalo died and they could not sustain a livlihood but when the marsh was re-flooded they returned with the water.
