MACEDONIA. Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Skopje. 6. May 1942. On Saint George's day the Bulgarian Archbishop Sofronii of Tarnovo celebrates mass. The Bulgarian code of arms in Skopje shows that the German army gave Bulgaria administrative power over Macedonia during the occupation. The Location is Macedonia Square next to the Army Club Building which was destroyed in an earthquake of 1963. Archbishop Sofronii (1888-1961) became Metropolitan of Turnovo in 1935 and remained in the cathedra till his death. During the Second World War he was member of the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Church that in 1943 initiated a successful petition against deportation of Jews from Bulgarian territories. (Jews from the occupied territories, including Macedonia, were deported earlier).
