This photo was taken in early 2015, when the Turkey-PKK peace process appeared to be on track and people in Diyarbakir were enjoying a respite from the violence. Even then, however, tension was palpable in the city. Since then, the peace process has all but collapsed under domestic and regional pressures and Sur is once again the site of deadly clashes between PKK-aligned militants and Turkish security forces.
