Security forces have repeatedly put Silvan under weeks-long curfews, under which dozens have died and many have lost their homes. Many people in southeast Turkey are increasingly critical of the state for imposing the curfews, but also of the PKK for bringing the fight into their cities. A so-called "peace process" between the Turkish state and the PKK has officially been underway since early 2013, but conditions on the ground tell a very different story. Most people in southeast Turkey believe their region is steadily marching back toward civil war.
