KYRGYZSTAN. Karasu. 2008. An Uzbek woman in Kyrgyzstan collects dirty water from the canal that divides the Kyrgyz and Uzbek sides of the town of Karasu. The canal was redirected to create a physical border between the countries after the Soviet Union was dismantled. Uzbeks living on the Kyrgyz side of the town have long had Kyrgyz water funneled to their homes via Uzbekistan but residents say Uzbekistan recently cut off their water supply, leaving them with no choice but to take water for drinking and washing from this canal.
