TURKEY. Hasankeyf, Anatolia Region. 2008. A woman looks out at the Tigris from a ledge near her home on the rocky cliffs rising up from the river. In the background is an ancient castle. The government forced families to move out of the caves in the cliffs 40 years ago but a few families refused to leave. Hasankeyf is one of mankind's oldest settlements, but with the construction of the Ilisu Dam on the Tigris River, over 50 villages and several small towns, including Hasankeyf and its historical surroundings, are likely to be flooded in the near future.
