MONGOLIA. Moron. 2010. A bronze age site, Uushigiin Uver contains 14 upright carved deer stones and sacrificial altars. Its 20 km west of Moron. They are about 2500-4000 years old. The nearby mountain range contains about 1400 burial tombs. Deer stones are ancient burial markers. Ancient steppe tribes (not settled, but nomads) believed that after death a soul departed from this world and ascended to the sky on the backs of deer. Many stones are also carved with a belt with tools which help the soul navigate the afterlife. Out of 700 deer stones in the world, 500 are in Mongolia. Our guide Nats says that they belonged to Kyrgyz/Turkic people, not Mongols.
