Newsha Tavakolian
IRAN. Zardkuh, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari. 2018. Zahra Abdolahi, 31 years old sitting in her tent in which she lives with her husband, only daughter and mother in law. Bakhtiari women mostly live with their in laws and there is a saying between them which is the proof: Girls belong to other. This saying can be the origin of the law between them that prevents women to receive inheritance as they think of married women being a member of her in-laws family not hers. Zahra: “ Women can ask for the rights and inheritance, her brother might accept and give her share but there will be no siblings relationship between them after that! We can ask our brother to buy us stuff or any thing we need but us, Bakhtiari women won’t ask for inheritance as it’s our brother’s shares.” Zahra has only a daughter, whom she really wants to help her continue studying.
