Newsha Tavakolian
IRAN. Zardkuh, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari. 2018. Marzieh Esmaeilpour, 33 years old standing with her sons while looking after their few goats. Marzieh and her husband sold their flock and kept only 20 of them, as they needed money to buy back her husband’s military service so that he can find a job. “ I’ve studied until 5th grade and after there were no one to help me continue my education and now I really want my boys to go to school. To make it happen we need to live in a city and for living in a city my husband should find a job! That’s the reason we sold our flock to buy back his military service.” Selling or losing the flocks mourn Bakhtiari families and even their neighbors. “In our tradition boys inherit only and it’s really bad for woman to ask for her inheritance, if she does so people would talk really badly about her as if she is taking her brother’s inheritance.”
