IRAQ. Mosul. January 13, 2019.
76-year-old Qasim Yahya is a former soldier from Mosul who served in the Iraqi Army during the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980's and the invasion of Kuwait in the 1990's. Before ISIS took control of Mosul, Qasim worked as a secretary in a medical clinic, but he lost his job when the clinic was targeted by an airstrike.
Qasim stayed in Mosul's Old City during the reign of ISIS and he made money by guarding the homes and businesses of people that decided to leave the city.
Qasim now works selling tea in a small corner shop.
He married two times, his first wife died, and now he lives with his second wife and his daughter, one of Qasim’s brothers is still missing since he tried to escape ISIS territory and no one heard about him. Mosul, Iraq. January 13, 2019.
