GB. England. London. Whitechapel. 2011. Located outside the walls of the City of London, Whitechapel has attracted immigrants from Roman times. Population shifts from the 17th to 19th centuries, resulted in many people taking up residence among the less savoury industries set up outside the walls - tanneries, breweries, foundries, brothels. Later the area attracted the immigrant Irish and Jews, now replaced by the Bangladeshis who constitute 52% of the ward. A young black boy carrying a palm frond and walking behind a religious procession yawns hugely.
