United Arab Emirates. Sharjah. Sharjah Fort which was partially demolished in 1970 is a double story traditional rock, coral and adobe fortification in the centre of the city. The fort was originally constructed in 1820 by the then ruler of Sharjah, Sheikh Sultan bin Saqr Al Qasimi. The one remaining original tower called kubs is shown on the left. Above the tower can be seen one of the traditional wind towers - the old emirati method of introducing cooler air into buildings. The fort has been restored by the current ruler, His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, as part of a comprehensive programme of ongoing restoration of the traditional core of the old port city of Sharjah under the name Heart of Sharjah. The restoration of Sharjah Fort was completed in April 1997. It stands surrounded by modern architecture and tall buildings. 2016
