France. Fontevraud. Fontevraud Abbey. The Royal Abbey of Our Lady of Fontevraud, a complex of religious buildings which since 1975 house a cultural centre. The abbey was founded in 1101 by the itinerant preacher Robert of Arbrissel and was a double monastry, housing both men and women in separate quarters. During the French Revolution it was disestablished as a monastery and served as a prison from 1804 to 1963. The King of England, Henry II, his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, and son, King Richard the Lionheart were buried here at the end of the 12th century. Four tombstone effigies. In front, right, Richard I, the Lionheart (Coeur de Lion) and, left, Isabella of Angouleme, wife of King John. Behind, right, Henry II, King of England and, left, his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine. Their remains were probably destroyed during the French Revolution. 2016
