Since the summer of 2016, life is slowly returning to normal in Minamisoma after it was heavily damaged in the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. In July of 2016 some 10,000 Minamisoma residents were officially permitted to return home after Fukushima nuclear disaster evacuation orders covering parts of the city were lifted.
