Republic of Armenia. Aramvir region. Etchmiadzin. In front of Holy Etchmiadzin cathedral.
Ceremony of Saint-Chrême, or ceremony of the Holy Oils.
This ceremony takes place every 7 years, it has been celebrated since the year 301, the start of construction of the cathedral Holy Etchmiadzin.
From a few drops of oil consecrated according to tradition by Jesus Christ, priests mix what remains of the previous oils, from century to century.
The new oil thus obtained is placed for 40 days in a cauldron with 40 kinds of flowers from all over the world.
This new oil is distributed around the world in special bottles, in the hands of the patriarchs, for the celebration of baptisms.
The faithful awaiting the ceremony.
Sunday, September 29, 1991.
