BRAZIL. 2019. Iin 2019, more than 70.000 wildfires were declared in the state of Mato Grosso. Government, NGOs, firemen and the army all have different versions and provide confusing information, but what is noticieable with no doubt is that Mato Grosso is in the frontline of a war between Progress and Nature. Vast extensions of rainforrest have disapperaded in the last 50 years and have been replaced by extensive agriculture fields, tree plantations and grass for the more than 74 million cows (34% of the total in Brazil) that live in the state.
The numbers indicate a constant acceleration in the agro-business and a radical reduction of the preserved area.
