BRAZIL. 2019. the fazenda of Sidnei Hübner is just 800 acres, a small one for the area. In the beginning of August a fire burnt 2/3 of his area right after the corn harvest. The fire started at a some neighbours land who was “cleaning” an area of forest, it was fueled by the remains of the crops, passed by his house and stopped where the forest starts.
In the picture, Sidnei shows a satellyte view of the area that was burnt and how the fire advancedd own to his fazenda from the neighbour´s property. Those who start fires without control are subject to an investigation and may face criminal responsability depending on the damages. The fire brigade and starts an investigation that most of the times ends with a modest fine. Bolsonaro´s government has lightened the consequences that the owners of fazendas face for fire destruction and despite the wildfires being common every year during the dry season, 2019, saw them increase significantly generating international concern.
