NETHERLANDS. Muiden.2015. Sinterklaas celebration in Muiden. Every year, starting 11th of November, dutch cities celebrate the arrival of St Nicholas and Zwarte Piet (black peter), St Nicholas' servant who comes dressed like a renaissance minstrel: black face, painted red lips, afro wig.
The celebration is very rooted in dutch tradition and is a major event in Holland as every city around the country celebrates the arrival of St Nicholas by parading him through the streets, on top of his white horse. This tradition has been at the centre of controversy since 2011 due to the racist connotations it implies.
