Statue of James Garfield, 20th President of the US, born in Ohio, who practiced law in Cleveland and became a nine-time US congressman and Ohio senator prior to becoming president. The Republican Convention of 1880, which resulted in Garfield — who was not one of the original candidates — being nominated, was the longest brokered Republican convention in history. They voted 36 times before nominating Garfield, who subsequently defeated the Democrat candidate, Winfield Scott Hancock. Just a few months after his inauguration, Garfield was assassinated.
