IRAQ. Baghdad. February 4, 2016. Wassan Hassan, 30, sits in a wheelchair near her 10-year-old son Rami inside a makeshift trailer home where they live in the predominantly Sunni Adamiyah district of Baghdad. Wassan and her family have been displaced from Ramadi for the past year due to the conflict with the Islamic State.
In December of 2006, Wassan lost her two legs and her sister was killed after a rocket hit their home during fighting between American forces and Sunni insurgents active in Ramadi.
The International Committee of the Red Cross tries to help families like Wassan's cope with the distribution of food parcels. In many cases it also distributes personal hygiene kits, stoves, blankets and heaters. However, it is difficult for families to be resilient under such circumstances.
