In January 2015, the YPG (the PKK Syrian affiliate) backed by coalition airstrikes succeeded in expelling the Islamic State (IS) from the town. Seventy percent of the city was destroyed by airstrikes and fighting. The YPG now controls the town, which has mostly been reduced to rubble.
