USA. Sells, Arizona. 1999. The Tohono O'Odham Reservation stretches for 60 miles along the Mexican border, cutting the tribe off from a third of its people. In 1916, it was the last reservation established by the U.S. government. The whites called the Tohono O'Odham "Papagoes" or "Bean Eaters." It wasn't until 1949 that the members of the tribe were allowed to vote. That was four years after Ira Hayes, a Prima Indian from the Gila River Reservation, helped raise the American flag on Mt. Suibachi on Iwo Jima.
