CHINA. Guangzhou, Guangdong, 1996. When I visited Guangzhou in 1993, there was some traffic congestion on sections of the main city roads, but bicycles were still the principal means of transportation. Three years later when I revisited Guangzhou, the congestion on Dongfeng Road, one of the city's main streets, was as bad as that in downtown Bangkok. I had heard that the rate of economic growth in southern Guangdong Province, centered on Guangzhou, was the highest in China, but I could not have imagined such a tremendous increase in the number of motor vehicles on the road.
