AFGHANISTAN. Abdulgan region of northern Afghanistan, 2001. Thousands of Hazara people are trapped high in the Mushkel-Hal mountains. In the village of Bini Gaw, as well as some 60 other villages, half the population fled in search of food after the fall of the Taliban. By December 2001, those who were too weak to make the journey died.
