NORTH KOREA. Kaesong, Hwanghae-do. 1997. During the Korean War, from 1950 to 1953, almost all of North Korea was reduced to ashes from the fighting and bombings. The old capital Kaesong, however, was the site of frequent cease-fire negotiations between representatives of North Korea and the UN. There was thus less bombing here, and rows of traditional homes such as those in this photo remained unscathed. As South Korea has developed, such homes have gradually disappeared. It may be that Kaesong is the only place on the entire Korean peninsula where this many traditional homes can be seen.
