GUATEMALA. El Quiche. Nebaj. 1988. A Mayan indian refugee weaves on her back-strap loom in a refugee compound. Refugees had come out of hiding in the mountains of the Ixil Triangle. Originally, they had fled the genocide but started to come back after years of hunger and starvation. In these compounds they were "re-educated" by the army. The Catholic Church, which had suffered much persecution from the military, was replaced with more right-wing Protestant sects that stressed personal salvation rather than the "social gospel of justice".
